Worldliness

“Today, the greatest challenge facing American Evangelicals is not persecution from the world, but seduction by the world.”

Title: Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World

Author: Edited by C.J. Mahaney

Brief summary: This book describes the pervasive danger of worldliness among Christians. Chapter by chapter, each author discusses an area of life in which worldliness sneaks in: Media, music, materialism, and clothing. Finally the book ends with the godly ways in which we should interact with the world.

What I liked about it: I very much enjoyed how practical this book was. Each chapter was well laid out biblically, and each topic presented many challenging applications.

If this tells you anything, I can’t wait to get this book into the hands of my teens!  While every generation is bombarded by worldliness, teens are especially vulnerable to peer pressure (what every one around them is doing) and yet it’s also a season in which a person is establishing their own ideas and habits that will affect them for years to come. The foundation laid in this book is exactly what our teens need to hear.

I noticed the modesty chapter (and appendixes) in this book took a much more conservative and thorough approach than is usual, but it gave much food for thought.  For example, there was a big emphasis on wedding dress/bridesmaid modesty. Not many people talk about this specific issue, but truly what an important aspect to consider on a day when the glory of God ought to be especially on display.
